Encapsulating cells in gel microbeads

Encapsulating cells in gel microbeads allows researchers to isolate thousands or millions of single cells in a highly reproducible method. Using hydrogel droplets or beads offers many new applications and capabilities.

The use of hydrogel beads or droplets offers promising delivery systems for encapsulation and release of proteins amongst other useful advantages for researchers.

Encapsulating cells in gel microbeads allows applications including:

  • 3D culture in a highly defined (gel bead) micro-environment
  • Gel-encapsulated cells are useful for transplants, as they can be protected from the host immune system
  • Gel beads containing cells can be FACS sorted
  • Allows reagents or reaction mixes to be diffused in and out
